An Introduction to Rift

The story behind Rift is an interesting mix of fantasy and sci-fi filled with alternate realities, other worlds, magic, time traveling, technology, and even the supernatural. You, the player, are the Ascended: a person who was killed in a previous life and resurrected as an immortal by either the Gods or machines, depending on your faction.

There are two player factions to align yourself with, the Guardians and the Defiant.
The Guardians believe in and worship the Gods of the Vigil. The Defiant are a collective of races that have rejected the Gods of the Vigil in favor of developing their scientific understanding and their machinery. The familiar red vs. blue is here in Telara.
Though, unlike the Horde and the Alliance, the Defiant and Guardians get along much better and tend to not slaughter each other on a regular basis (outside of PvP matches).
Within these two factions are six unique races. The Mathosian, High Elves, and Dwarves belonging to the Guardians. With the Eth, Kelari, and the Bahmi belonging to the Defiants.
The Mathosians and the Eth are going to be your human races, the difference being skin tone and lore.
The Kelari and High Elves are both elves; their dichotomy is going to be similar to that of the Blood Elves and the Night Elves. The Kelari are actually a little bit more tribalistic and their theme resembles the Trolls, where as the High Elves are a little bit more of the high fantasy elves we're use to seeing.
The Dwarves are pretty standard as well, though they are a solid choice if you are a proud dwarf.
The Bahmi are the love child of the Trolls, Draenei, and Tauren (that's a lot of horns in a small space). They're the largest of the six races and are into facial tribal tattoos. Though they do not have any horns, scales, or fur.

The Defiant and Guardians live in the world of Telara, a converging point for many realities. Besides Telara, there are the six planes of reality: Fire, Earth, Water, Air, Life, and Death. Each of these six planes have their own representative. Well, more like a dragon. A very powerful dragon. We're talking Deathwing status with these six dragons. Yeah, six Deathwings to deal with that can shape and mold not only their plane of reality, but the Ascended reality as well. With armies that know how to conduct mass assaults and operate mechs, (mechs, Twilight's Hammer, mechs).
Fortunately for Telara, they don't get along too well, giving a brief reprieve to the otherwise endless onslaughts.
